Edison Women Defeat Nationally Ranked Sinclair on Couch Night

Our Lady Chargers upset Sinclair who was ranked #15 team in the country going into Wednesday’s contest. After leading 38-36 at halftime, Edison pulled away in the second half to secure a 10 point victory. The win improves our Lady Chargers record to 14-12 overall 8-6 in conference. The women’s next game will be in two weeks when Edison hosts the Region XII Basketball Tournament.

The men however just fell short in their game with Sinclair 82-78. With less than 2minutes to go Edison scored to take the lead 74-70, however Sinclair hit some tough shots down the stretch to pull out the win. The men dropped to 14-15 overall and 4-10 in the conference. The men will play their final regular season game on Saturday when they host Lorain C.C. @ 3:00pm.

Chargers Finish Fourth in the Country

Chargers Finish 4th in the CountryThe volleyball team fell to Central Lakes C.C. 3-1 in the semi-final match this morning. The Lady Chargers took the lead early but could not hang on to secure the win.

Edison then lost the consolation match to Brookhaven C.C. Fatigue and injuries began to settle in and the Lady Chargers found themselves fighting uphill throughout the day.
Jessica Girod and Erin Schieltz were named to the all tournament team. They certainly deserved the awards.

The volleyball team finished 4th in the nation out of 78 Division III teams. Not bad! We are very proud of the season they had and enjoyed the journey!

A big thank you to the administration, Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and our local community for all of their support throughout the season and especially during the teams tournament trail. Our Lady Chargers had a great season and they represented the program, college, and community well.

College is about making memories and good experiences inside and outside of the classroom. The experiences the volleyball team had this season and especially the last two weeks will forever be a highlight in their lives. Thank you for making their experiences one they will not forget!

Volleyball Team Advances to Final Four

The Lady Chargers advanced to the final four of the national volleyball tournament by finishing the day 7-2 in pool play.Edison did lose a tough match to the #1 team in the country, Ridgewater CC 2-1. The scores were 23-30. 26-30, 30-17.

The volleyball team will face Central Lakes CC (Minnesota) at 10:00ct in one of the semi-final matches while Ridgewater CC will play Brookhaven (Texas) in the other semifinal match.

The way the tournament has turned out thus far the top four seeds of the tournament have advanced. Our Lady Chargers are tired but excited to have the opportunity to play in tomorrow for a national championship.

Lady Chargers Earn Second Win of the Tournament The volleyball team defeated Catawba Valley C.C. 3-0 (30-17, 30-22, 30-18) to improve their pool play record to 6-0.

Edison's next and last match of pool play will be against defending national champion and the current ranked #1 team in the country, Ridgewater C.C. (Minnesota). Match time will be 5:30ct, 6:30et.

A lot of volleyball to be played yet that will impact pool play records, but the Lady Chargers are putting themselves in a good position thus far. The last match will be a challenge but that is why you play the games. Go Chargers!

Lady Chargers Win Regional/District Title-Advance to National Tournament

The volleyball team defeated Anne Arundel C.C. once again in the championship match to win the Region XX and District G Championships. Edison won in 3, 30-21, 30-23, 30-23.

Edison had 5 team members that were voted on the all tournament team. They include Jayme Kreitzer, Natasha Selle, Erin Schieltz, Laura Deaton, and tournament MVP (most valuable player), Jessica Girod.

The Lady Chargers finished the tournament 3-0 by defeating Howard 3-1, and Anne Arundel twice 3-0.

Edison will advance to the national tournament for the second straight year in Rochester, Minnesota. The tournament will be held November 16-17, More details will be forthcoming regarding tournament seeding and when/who we will play.

The volleyball team defeated Anne Arundel C.C. 3-0 to advance to the championship match of the tournament. Edison will play @ 7:00pm for the district championship and an opportunity to play in the national tournament. Go Chargers!!

Volleyball Team Wins First Round Match
The Lady Chargers defeated Howard C.C. in the first round of tournament play 3-1. Scores were 28-30, 30-16, 30-15. 30-20. Edison will play Anne Arundel C.C. @ 3:00pm. Go Chargers!

Volleyball Team Ranked # 1 in the Country!

The NJCAA Division III Volleyball Poll was released this afternoon and our Edison Chargers were ranked #1! This is a first for any Charger team to be placed this high in a poll. A committee of six people which includes coaches and athletic directors decide based on strength of schedule where a team will be placed on the poll.

Edison’s schedule includes all Division II teams which are scholarship programs. In addition several of the schools that we have and will compete against are nationally ranked at the Division II level. The Lady Chargers will not compete against any Division III teams until postseason play.

These polls are certainly subjective and there is a lot of volleyball to play before the season ends, but this certainly a great honor for the program and institution as I have mentioned in previous emails. The volleyball team certainly will continue to work and hope to be playing its best “ball” in November when tournament play begins.

Division III Volleyball Poll
2007 national runner-up Edison Community College (Piqua, Ohio) takes the top spot in the first regular-season NJCAA Division III Volleyball poll. The Chargers are followed by defending national champins Ridgewater College (Willmar, Minn.) in second and third-place finisher Central Lakes College (Brainerd, Minn.) in third.

* Brookhaven, the 2004 and 2005 national champions, opened the season with 15 matches against Division I opponents and one match against a Division II opponent, defeating Division I Western Texas and Ranger.

Edison Earns First Conference Win-Defeats Columbus State

The Lady Chargers traveled to Columbus State to get their first conference win of the season by defeating the Cougars in four 19-30, 30-27, 33-31, 30-28. The win improves the Chargers record to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

Edison’s next match will be at Clark State on Saturday morning with the first serve beginning at 11:00am. Go Chargers!

Volleyball Team Receives National Recognition

Just recently the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) just released their first Division III volleyball pre-season poll and our Edison Chargers were ranked # 5 in the country. The first poll is based on returning players, results from the previous season, and strength of schedule for the upcoming season.

The Lady Chargers return 3 players from last year’s national runner-up team. They include Laura Deaton, Jessica Girod, and Natasha Selle . All of which will be considered top regional players for this upcoming season. Girod will seriously be considered as a pre-season All-American for Division III.

The volleyball team has gotten off to a strong start thus far earning a 10-3 record. Some of their biggest wins of the season to this point have been winning the Central Ohio Invitational Tournament and upsetting nationally ranked Division II Macomb Community College. All of the Chargers defeats came to Division II teams and two of which were nationally ranked.

While there is a lot of volleyball to be played this season, it is a nice honor for the team as well as our college. The next poll will be released on September 12.

Lady Chargers Have Strong Outing at the Owens Weekend Volleyball Classic

Coach Snider-Dearth took her Lady Chargers to compete in the Owens C.C. Invitational this past weekend. The competition was outstanding where there were five ranked NJCAA Division II(scholarship) teams participating. Edison was the only Division III(non-scholarship) team competing.

The volleyball team finished 4-2 including earning a huge win over Division II nationally ranked Macomb Community College. The Lady Chargers entered this weekend's play hoping to finish in the top half of the invitational and they did just that. Their only two losses came to nationally ranked teams in Vincennes University and Kalamazoo Valley C.C..

Edison's overall record is now 9-3. The Lady Chargers will open conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Columbus State C.C.. The match begins at 6:00pm. Go Chargers!

Volleyball Team Gets First Road Victory of the Year

Edison secured its first road win of the year by defeating a very pesky Urbana team in five games last Wednesday night. The Lady Chargers were led in all statistical categories by the three returning sophomores of Laura Deaton, Jessica Girod, and Natasha Selle. Their leadership helped their team prevail in a very challenging environment. Edison's record improved to 5-1.

Volleyball Team Wins Opening Weekend Tournament

The volleyball team opened up its season by winning the Western Division of the Central Ohio Invitational this past weekend. The Lady Chargers defeated Urbana and Moraine Valley C.C. before losing its first match of the year to Muskegon C.C. on Friday. Edison bounced back on Saturday by defeating Oakland C.C. and conference rival Clark State C.C in an exciting championship match. What made it even more interesting was that all of the teams that competed in the tournament were scholarship teams with the exception of Edison!

The Chargers will now begin a long stretch of away matches and will not host a home match until the end of September when arch rival Sinclair C.C. visits the Student and Convocation Center.

Edison will travel to Urbana on Wednesday and then to Owens C.C. this coming weekend to compete in a tournament that will have some of the best Division II (scholarship) teams in the country. Go Chargers!

Thank You from the Women's Basketball Team and Athletic Department

I wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone who helped support and make the women's basketball season extra special. As many of you know the women's team qualified for the national tournament in Phoenix, Arizona after capturing the Region 12 District G Championship.

The women's team had a wonderful experience out west last week. While the team had the opportunity to play basketball they also were fortunate to do some "sightseeing". The women traveled through Sedona and saw the sun set on the Grand Canyon. In addition the team went and watched a spring training baseball game and walked around the campus of Arizona State University. Of course the trip would not have been complete without the chance of shopping and eating at neat restaurants throughout the week.

Your support through the bake sale, "Pie in the Eye", and donations helped make the women's team experience fun. It was great to see so many people take an active role in assisting the women's team fund their trip to the national tournament. There definitely was a unique "buzz" on campus that week!

Before last week many of these student-athlete's had never flown in an airplane much less traveled outside the State of Ohio. These student-athletes may never remember the score of any of their games but they will forever remember the memories they made in Arizona! Edison was well represented on and off the basketball court! They certainly made our college proud!

The athletic department had an outstanding year thanks to the help of the many people on campus. After having not sent one team to any national tournament in the history of the college, Edison sent two teams to the national tournament this year and our men's basketball team finished with it's first "20" win season in 10 years. Not bad for a small little community college in Piqua, Ohio!

The athletic department would again like to thank everyone for not only celebrating in our women's basketball team's success but also the triumphs of our other teams as well! Our athletic teams could not have enjoyed the success it had without the many people on campus that assisted our student-athletes in various ways. From Dr. Yowell, the Board of Trustees, and President's Cabinet, Student Development and Welcome Center, to the personnel and business offices, maintenance staff, faculty, and many other staff members. The Edison Family was very much a part of this exciting and memorable year!

Women's Basketball Team @ Nationals

The final score of the women’s game was Rhode Island 68 Edison 65. The Lady Chargers will play tomorrow at 10am Arizona time 1pm Ohio time, their opponent with be the losers of the Mott CC and Chandler-Gilbert Game.

Women's Team Ready To Depart

The moment has finally arrived. After nine years of coaching and four regional final appearances, Coach Kim Rank is ready to load his team on the bus for the NJCAA Women's Division II National Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona. The women will take their 17-14 record and the school's first regional basketball championship to the west coast. The Lady Chargers will play their first game on Wednesday March 14 @ 12:00pm (3:00pm Piqua time) against the Community College of Rhode Island.

The women are guaranteed a minimum of two games and a maximum of four. We will get results emailed to you so you can follow the women's progress. You can also go to www.njcaa.org and click the drop down box that says "women". Click "Basketball II" and then click "Tournament" at the top. Once you click the tournament you will then click "Results". There will be a complete box score of all the games this week.

Thank you again for being so supportive of the women's team. The support was overwhelming and the women greatly appreciate it! Phoenix here we come! Go Chargers!

Edison Men Fall Short

The men's basketball team played an inspirational game without their leading scorer Josh Vorst. Vorst had sprained his ankle against Columbus State the night before the Cincinnati State game.

The Chargers led throughout the first half against nationally ranked Cincinnati State and had a couple of lead changes in the second half before Cincinnati State was able to separate themselves from the Chargers with 1:48 to in the game. The Chargers fell 80-68.

Edison finished the season 20-9. This was Edison's best season in ten years! Congratulations to the men's team and coaches for a fun and exciting year! Go Chargers!

Edison Advances to Final Four

Our Chargers defeated Columbus State 68-61 in the first round of the regional tournament last night. Edison improved their record to 20-8 and secured the first 20 win season since the 1998-99 season.

Edison will now advance and play the #1 seed in the tournament and the # 8 team in the country, Cincinnati State. The Chargers will take the floor in Cincinnati @ 5:00. Go Chargers!

Edison Earns a Trip to Arizona!

Our Edison Chargers upset nationally ranked and defending regional champion Kalamazoo Valley C.C. 57-55. The Chargers were led by Stacy Feathers, Monica Seger, and Brenda Hemmelgarn each scoring 16 points. Edison got hot at the right time of the year. Prior to winning this tournament, the Lady Chargers lost their last 2 games of the regular season. It is all about timing! Jodi Zimmerman was awarded tournament MVP while Stacy Feathers earned all tournament honors!

Edison will head out west during Spring Break Week and play March 14-17. Details of who and when Edison will play will be coming later. It is a great day to be a Charger!

Edison to Host Regional Basketball Tournament

March Madness has arrived! Edison will be hosting the Region 12 (Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio) Women's Basketball Tournament the next three days. Nine teams will be participating in this year's tournament. Six schools are from Michigan, three from Ohio, and one from Indiana. Game times and the tournament bracket is listed below. The winner of the tournament earns a trip to the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) National Tournament in Phoenix, Arizona.

Edison will be playing on Thursday March 1 at 6:00pm against Muskegon C.C. Our Lady Chargers are 14-13 and have high hopes as they enter tomorrow's game.

Please feel free to come and watch games throughout the afternoon and evening. Admission is free and there will be a lot of excitement in the gym as these nine teams have been preparing all season for this week. The athletic department is honored to host this prestigious tournament!

Coach Zeller Earns his 500th Career Victory!

The men's basketball coach and long time coaching legend, Dave Zeller earned his 500th career victory just recently by defeating Clark State 88-78. Coach Zeller has coached at Piqua HS, Graham HS, and Miami East HS before he accepted the Edison position in 2004. We are very proud of Coach Zeller and we are excited that he was able to capture his 500th win while coaching our Chargers! We will be having a reception for Dave and our sophomores tomorrow after the men's game about 5:00pm in the pavilion. Congratulations Coach!

Men's Basketball Team Continues to Roll

The men's basketball team defeated conference power Owens C.C. on Saturday afternoon 91-83. The Chargers were led by Josh Vorst with 21 points, Marino Bowles powering in 20 points, Aaron Braun earning 14 points, and Alex Hoying dumping in 12 points. The Chargers improve their record to 16-2 overall and 4-1 in the league. The Men will host the first place team in the conference Wednesday night Cincinnati State @ 7:30.

The women were not as fortunate as they were defeated 62-43 by Owens C.C. The Lady Chargers were led by Whitney Warvel who scored 14 points.

Edison Women Upset Cincinnati State

The Edison women won in big fashion Wednesday evening by throttling Cincinnati State 62-42. The Chargers improved their record to 12-8 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

The men fell short however against the # 11 ranked team in the country 71-57. The Chargers fall to 16-3 overall and 4-3 in the conference.

Both the women and the men travel to Columbus state on Saturday to complete the first round of league action. The women will tip off at 1:00pm while the men will start their contest @ 3:00pm. Go Chargers!

Men's and Women's Basketball Teams Having Good Seasons

The men's basketball team is off to its best start since the 1988-89 team with a 14-2 record. The men recorded wins last week over their arch rival Sinclair 82-68 last Wednesday. The men continued their winning ways by defeating Cuyahoga C.C on Saturday 100-89.

One of Edison's own, Josh Vorst was just voted conference player of the week. The conference web page recently reported the following: "Josh Vorst, Edison State Community College, Piqua OH is the OCCAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week. Vorst had 20 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists against Sinclair Community College, Dayton OH, in a 82-68 win. He followed up his Sinclair game with 27 points on 10 for 12 shooting, and 4 assists in a 100-87 win over Cuyahoga Community College, Cleveland OH. "

Edison State Assistant Coach, Matt Rutledge says, "Josh is a big reason why Edison is off to their best start in recent years."

The women's team also had a nice win over Cuyahoga C.C. on Saturday by defeating the Challengers 79-58. The women are 9-8 and look to challenge for a top spot in the conference.
